Current and Recent Asbestos Projects

LARGE SCALE RE-ROOFING:

Project One Contracting has recently carried out two sub-contracts to two other roofing companies for the removal and replacement of a large amount of Asbestos to be re-roofed IN ONE DAY! The first job was over 3,800m2,ALL ACTUAL WORK ON THIS PROJECT WAS CARRIED OUT BY PROJECT ONE CONTRACTING ONLY.

The second job was for just under 5,000m2, Project One Contracting was contracted to work in with the other roofing company to ensure that it was completed in one day.

Some companies are claiming these jobs as actual World Records. However, watch this space as we have two larger projects coming up. The first one will push the World Record to new limits and the second one will push it beyond what was thought possible and will stand for a long time.

Department of Defence, Northern Rd, Orchard Hills

Project One Contracting was contracted by another roofing company to carry out this project.

Government sites in general maintain the highest levels of safety and OHS compliance and Orchard Hills, was no different. However, where many contractors view this as a hindrance, Project One are well aware that safety must be paramount. Achieving targets whilst constantly adhereing to current OHS law and regulation is part and parcel of every day for the team at Project One Contracting.

Marigold St, Revesby (This was completed over Christmas, whilst under contract to another roofing company).

6,500 square metres of asbestos off to be replaced by kliplok sheeting. Target was five weekends, we lost one to inclement weather, so hit the target in four weekends instead. Another happy client.

Stanton Rd, Seven Hills

Our client was another roofing company for this project.

6,000 square metres stripped and laid in four days, rained for a further three, finished by day 9. Client was able to keep operating whilst works were being undertaken so suffered minimal loss of production.

Asbestos and Asbestosis

Asbestos is a hazardous substance from a silicate rock formations found throughout Australia. When asbestos fibres become airborne and inhaled either through the nose or mouth (asbestos does not penetrate through the skin) fibres can attach to the alveoli causing lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. Asbestos diseases can appear 25 to 40 years after a person has been first exposed and can be fatal.

The occupational health and safety, safe exposure standard is 0.1 fibres per millilitre of air therefore great care must be taken not to disturb asbestos.

Common Sources of Asbestos in Buildings

• Fibro sheeting

• Corrugated asbestos cement products such as roofing sheets and fencing

• Asbestos vinyl floor tiles

• Asbestos roofing shingles

• Water pipe lagging

• Insulations

• Electrical boards and fittings

Project One Contracting has successfully completed the asbestos cement removal and re-roofing of more than 80,000 square meters in the past 12 months.

Different forms of asbestos material, different risk levels.

If asbestos fibres are in a stable material such as bonded in asbestos-cement sheeting such as fibro and in good condition they pose little health risk . However where fibro or other bonded asbestos sheeting is broken, damaged or mishandled fibres can become loose and airborne posing a risk to health. Disturbing or removing it unsafely can create a hazard.

In materials such as pipe lagging and sprayed roof insulation asbestos fibres are not bound in a matrix. High concentrations of fibres are much more likely to be released into the atmosphere when these materials are disturbed or removed.

Here are some examples;

  • Do not use power tools. Asbestos fibres can be released if power tools are used for anything other than the removal of screws.
  • Wear an Australian Standards Protection Level 2 (P2) minimum half face disposable mask and disposable coveralls. These are generally available from hardware suppliers.  Non-Australian Standards certified masks should not be used where asbestos is present.
  • Wet sheets down to reduce dust generation and movement.
  • Take the sheets off whole (again, do not use power tools as this may create dust movement).
  • Seal sheets in construction grade plastic. (This should be 200 microns thick.)
  • Contact your Local Council for a licensed disposal point in your area. Waste Service NSW on (02) 9934 7000 will be able to help if you live in the Sydney metropolitan area. Contact the NSW Department of Environment and Conservation Pollution Line on 13 15 55 for information on legally transporting and disposing of asbestos waste.

Should the asbestos be in powder form or can be crumbled, pulverized or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry, then an asbestos removal contractor with an AS1 Licence is required for its removal.

Asbestos removal: Removal of loose/friable asbestos or amounts of bonded asbestos sheeting greater than 10 square metres must be done by a licensed person.
